Chip&PIN, the safest payment system in the world, is now available in Turkey! With the Chip&PIN, launched in Turkey on 31 March 2006, using your credit card while shopping has become even safer.

About Chip&PIN
  • Chip&PIN system is a security system used around the world and required by Visa and Mastercard.
  • Forgery and identity theft have become an increasing concern not only in Turkey, but also throughout the world.
  • With the help of the Chip&PIN system, now credit card users have a much safer payment system. While the chip on your credit card offers protection in the event that your card is lost, the password (PIN) prevents your card from being used by someone else.
  • Previously, only a signature was required to make purchases with a credit card. Since April 1, 2006, however, with the new Chip&PIN system, retail outlets have begun to require the entry of your 4-digit PIN code on their credit card readers.
  • This security system is in place in many countries apart from Turkey. So you can shop safely both at home and abroad. If the Chip&PIN system is available in the countries you visit, you can use your card as you would in our country. In countries where this system is not available, your signature will still be required.
About Chip&PIN

What is a Chip?

The chip is a microchip on your credit card that contains your personal information in a more secure form than a magnetic strip. It makes card forgery almost impossible.

What is Chip&PIN?

Chip&PIN is a new payment method that greatly reduces the risks of credit card forgery and theft. The chip on the credit card reduces the risk of credit card forgery and the 4-digit password (PIN) prevents the card from being used by someone else if it is lost or stolen.

With the Chip&PIN method, a safer period has dawned for credit card shopping.

The PIN code is your identify number while shopping. With the help of this 4-digit password, you prove that you are the real owner of your card. You approve your payment by entering your password.

Why Chip&PIN?

For years credit cards used magnetic strips to record your information.

But with the spread of technology, these strips can now be forged. This is why bank cards and credit cards now use the much more secure microchip technology.

The use of a password (PIN) instead of a signature also makes the process safer. The

PIN code is a 4-digit number known only to the card’s owner. Thus, it can be used to show that you are the real card owner and enable you to authorize purchases.

The Chip&PIN system was first instituted in England. With this system, England, which accounts for half of all credit card forgeries in Europe, has greatly reduced the risk of such theft.

The security of your credit card information is increased with the help of chip cards compliant with EMV standards and credit card reading machines. EMV, institued by Europay, Mastercard, and Visa, is am international certification program that offers standards for compliance with the global payment system.

With nearly 1,000,000 EMV-compliant credit card reading machines, Turkey has the most advanced EMV infrastructure.

Why is shopping safer with Chip&PIN?

There are two main aspects to securing your credit card: The first is to prevent forgeries and the second is to ensure that only you can use your credit card. The microchip on your Chip&PIN card provides the first, while the password (PIN) provides the second.

If you want to change your password (PIN):

As 31 March 2006, you can change your password at any ATM with a Chip&PIN logo that participates in the password sharing system.

If you don’t know your password (PIN), how can you learn it?

If you can’t remember your PIN code or if you haven’t received it yet, you can request a new one by calling 444 5 666.

What happens if you enter your password (PIN) wrong?

The POS credit card reader will inform you if you have entered your password incorrectly. If you enter your password incorrectly three times, your password will be blocked. If your password is blocked, you can still use your card without your password. You can unblock your cards’ password or request a new password by contacting our call center at 444 5 666.

Important points for your password (PIN) security

Do not give your password (PIN) or other security information to anyone, including sales people. If you have any suspicion your passowrd has been compromised, change it immediately.

Do not permit other people to use your credit card.

Do not keep your password written down. Do not write your password on your credit card.

When choosing a password, do not use easily guessed numbers such as your birthdate or telephone number.

How does Chip&PIN work?

  • When you are ready to make a purchase, the sales person will put your card into the chip reader on their credit card reading machine.

  • The chip reader will ask you to enter your password (PIN) on the machine.

  • After checking the sum to be paid, enter your 4-digit password and press the enter button to authorize the sale.

  • As your password is private, it will not appear on the screen. Instead, asterisks will appear representing the digits you input.

  • If you make a mistake while you are entering your password, press ‘clear’ button and enter your password again.

  • The screen will inform you when the payment has been processed. After authorizing the payment, the machine will give you a receipt. You should sign the sales slip, too.

  • If the store does not have a Chip&PIN system, you can authorize payment with your signature.
